Due to seasonal humidity, wood will expand and contract as the moisture content changes. If this movement is restricted, tops will crack or warp, and drawers will stick. Using proper joinery is the key to preventing this. I hand select each piece of wood that will be used for a dresser top, checking for matching grain and color as well as consistent moisture content. Using a moisture meter, I ensure that each piece has the same moisture content so all pieces will expand and contract consistently. In addition, all dresser tops are fastened with elongated holes which allow the top to move with seasonal changes. Drawers are all dovetail construction both front and back and the bottoms are allowed to float to keep the drawers more stable. Runners are made from hardwood use sliding dovetail configuration which keeps the drawers in line and prevents them from tipping forward when pulled out. Case construction is assembled with rabbet and dado joints which add strength and help keep the case square. Dustframes are also recessed into dadoes. Either solid cedar or cedar laminate is an option for the drawer bottoms.
